Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual - or at least that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country. -Samuel Adams 1781
In this issue:
1. County Commission does it again! 2. Endorsements for County Commission Districts 1 & 3
1. Socialist Triumvirate wins again
At the Brevard County Commission meeting this past Tuesday (Aug. 24), the "terrible trio" of Higgs, Scarborough and Carlson once again rejected common sense, fiscal responsibility and any sense of limited government. They voted to put on the ballot in November, a referendum to create "Son of EELS" by assessing the millage now going to Beach and Riverfront Acquisition (expiring this year after 20 years) for another 20 year program extending EELS, which we are already paying for through 2010. Besides the failures of the Beach and Riverfront program (did not provide the "access" as promised in the original referendum language), there are many questions about the true value of the existing EELS program. If they were really serious about the value of the EELS program, they would have given us taxpayers the time to evaluate its true benefit leading up to its mandated 20 year expiration in 2010, and THEN proposed extending it. We will activate "Ax the Tax Brevard" to educate the public on this fiasco prior to the November vote.
In addition to the EELS sequel, the same threesome voted to TRIPLE the telecommunications surcharges on your telephone, cable and satellite bills from 1.66% to 5.22%. The reason given by the current chairman, outgoing (Thank God!!!) Commissioner Higgs of it "being the only way" to do what is needed is a blatant lie! Just look at the recent Florida Today story by John McCarthy detailing how the County is flush with money from new construction and increased appraisals. When watching the three of them, it is obvious that their agenda has nothing to do with being good stewards of our money, and everything to do with creating a larger and larger socialist government behemoth.
2. Endorsements for County Commission
After reading the above and knowing everything else that has gone on with this Commission, we have got to go out there and make some changes. Three seats are up for election this year. Two will, for all intents be decided next Tuesday, August 31 in the Primary.
District 1-Truman Scarborough has been Commissioner from District 1 since 1988. He doesn't feel the term limits voted by Brevard citizens in 1998 apply to him. He MUST GO!!!! Jeff Rainey, a Titusville City Councilman needs all the support we can give him Tuesday. Please call everyone you know in District 1 and get them out to vote for Jeff. As there are no other candidates, this is an open primary. Every registered voter in District 1 can vote. The socialist, big government organizations will be doing everything they can to support their boy Truman. We must do the same to defeat him.
District 3- Nancy Higgs is not running for re-election, but the question is whether there may be a surrogate for her policies in the race. The Democratic candidate, Jane Havet does not seem to be a real contender, neither financially nor in her knowledge. The real race, and the future of the tax and government growth policies for Brevard County will be decided in the Republican Primary on Tuesday.
Of the three candidates in the race, I believe the only person we can count on to respect property rights, prioritize County budgets and not succumb to the hidden agendas of County staff is Dale Young. Helen Voltz, although she says she learned her lesson from her first stint on the Commission, did in the past, fall into the trap of "buying in" to staff agendas. Stuart Borton does not seem to understand what has gone on at the County level. I and others have asked questions of him numerous times to attempt to determine what his philosophy is and have yet to figure it out. I am fearful based on some of the people around his campaign, and the lack of conviction in his answers, that if he is elected, we may have more of the same from District 3.
Dale Young has the experience, the knowledge and the conviction of his beliefs to do the right job for residents of District 3 and the County. Please pass this on and talk to every registered Republican you know in District 3.
These are my personal endorsements and do not represent anything other than my personal opinion.
Sincerely, Bruce Wechsler (321) 728-1211
